ROHS: MAKING ELECTRONICS SAFE FOR PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH THE CONTROL OF TOXIC SUBSTANCES

What is RoHS?

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a European Union directive that restricts the use of hazardous substances in the production of electrical and electronic equipment.

History and purpose of RoHS

The RoHS Directive was first adopted by the EU in 2002 and entered into force on July 1, 2006. Its main goal is to reduce the amount of toxic materials that end up in landfills and the environment through the disposal of electronic waste.  Toxic substances that may be contained in devices can be released into the soil, water, and air after the products are disposed of. This leads to environmental pollution as well as possible serious human illness.

Why is RoHS important?

Think of this regulation as a purification system for products. Like a filter that filters out harmful elements, RoHS restricts the use of toxic substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and certain types of phthalates. This makes products more environmentally friendly and safer for end users and the planet as a whole.

The RoHS Directive is like a road sign on the highway for manufacturers. It doesn’t allow them to go in a dangerous direction, but rather shows them the safe way to create products that are environmentally friendly. If manufacturers ignore these “signs”, they can face serious consequences: fines, sales bans, or even loss of reputation.

BENEFITS OF ROHS COMPLIANCE

  • Access to the EU market:

RoHS compliance is mandatory for the sale of electronic products in the EU

  • Competitive advantage:

    Demonstrates the company’s environmental responsibility

  • Quality improvement:

Promotes the use of safer materials in production

  • Global trend:

Many countries outside the EU are also implementing similar standards

How to get RoHS compliance?
  • Product audit:

Checking components and materials for RoHS compliance

  • Testing:

Conducting laboratory tests to confirm the absence of prohibited substances

  • Documentation:

Preparation of technical documentation confirming compliance

  • Declaration of conformity:

Drawing up a declaration of conformity for products with RoHS requirements

What products does RoHS apply to?

RoHS applies to a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment, including:

  • Household appliances: refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves.
  • Information and communication equipment: computers, laptops, telephones.
  • Consumer electronics: TVs, audio systems, game consoles.
  • Lighting equipment: lamps, lighting devices.
  • Toys and sports equipment: electronic toys, exercise equipment.

If you manufacture or import products to the EU, your products must comply with RoHS requirements. It is important to make sure that your products do not contain hazardous substances or that their content is within the permissible limits.

What substances are restricted by RoHS?

The list of restricted substances includes:

1. Lead (Lead, Pb): used in soldering and batteries.

2. Mercury (Mercury, Hg): previously used in thermometers and lamps.

3. Cadmium (Cadmium, Cd): often found in batteries.

4. Hexavalent chromium (Chromium VI, Cr6+): used for coatings and corrosion prevention.

5. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): used as flame retardants in plastics and textiles.

6. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB): also used as flame retardants.

Later added to the list:

7. Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP)

8. Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)

9. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)

10. Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

These chemicals pose a significant threat to human health and the environment, so their use is strictly controlled.

HOW DOES ROHS AFFECT MANUFACTURERS?

The RoHS directive forces manufacturers to carefully check all the components they use in their production. This means that companies must track all stages of the production chain and ensure that products are compliant. RoHS compliance can be challenging, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. However, it also creates opportunities for innovation and the development of new, safer materials and manufacturing techniques.
